If you’ve followed me for a while, you probably know I have Border Collies. They are farm dogs, and we always had them on the farm to herd cattle. Even my two 11-month-old blue Merle puppies were born on a farm. Here they are this past summer.

So I decided to try The Farmers Dog. It does look like real meat and veggies—particularly the chicken formula. Dogs get three different flavors to be rotated daily or by whatever I pull out of the freezer to defrost. The flavors are chicken, turkey, and beef. Your order can be customized if you only want one or two flavors. Your order comes every two weeks, and the frozen bags are customized to be one bag per day. Learning to take food out of the freezer to defrost in time for the next meal was a learning curve for me. The order comes with dry ice, all frozen solid, and I put it all in the freezer, withholding two days’ worth out for the fridge, and every day take another out to defrost.

I did modify my order to customize the food as an “add-in” to the kibble, and therefore I only get half as much. I still trust the dry kibble to provide nutrients and solid stools.

The food is expensive; there’s no getting around it. It’s about twice as much as the bags of Iams puppy chow I buy. However, the dogs do love it! It even comes with a plastic refrigerator holder for two bags.
