Inventing a new Twist on Cheese steak Sandwiches

Necessity is the mother of invention as a the old proverb goes, and my twist on a cheese steak sandwich was just that. I had long sandwich rolls (hot dog rolls really), I had the cheese, peppers and onions. I didn’t have steak. I had ground beef. So hubby says, just brown up the hamburger and well make sandwiches from that. Genius!

This was so quick and so easy, and very economical. the pound of ground beef gave us dinner, plus lunch the next day.

All it took was browning the beef in one skillet, the peppers and onions in another, and sticking it under the broiler of my tiny counter top oven (affectionately called the Easy Bake oven around here) to melt the cheese. I added a salad and some deviled eggs and dinner was served.

To the ground beef I added some salt, pepper, and smoked paprika for extra flavor. Almost any spice or herbs could be added …. go southwestern with the smoked paprika and some cumin; Far East with Chinese 5 spice; Italian herb mix; fresh herbs like chives and parsley would be great, I just didn’t have any.

I can’t wait to get the herb garden going this spring!

Ground turkey or chicken could also be used to lower the fat content. I used sliced American Cheese, but take your pick: Provolone, Cheddar, American, Swiss, Jack – it’s really up to the individual!

This could also be a fun dinner for a “make your own” theme….. put out a variety of rolls, browned meat, onions, peppers, different cheeses and toppings like sour cream or chopped green onions…. and let the creativity flow.
